What do I need to do in order to connect to the Internet?
In order to connect and surf the net you need to follow few simple steps.
First you will figure out what hardware you require.
Second, which software is necessary in order to connect the net and exploit its capabilities.
Third, what is an ISP, why do you need it, and how to contact one.
Last, but certainly not least, how to set up your Packard Bell PC to establish a connection to the Internet.

To establish a connection to the Internet, you need to have a Fax-Modem card installed in your PC.
How would you know if you have one installed ?
Simply look at the back of your PC for a phone line socket.
If you are still not sure, then click the Start icon (lower left corner of the screen), then Settings,
Control Panel, and finally on the Modems icon.
There you will find the the modem name visible in the General tag.
Next, you need to link the phone socket in the PC and to the nearest available working telephone line socket in your house using the phone cord provided.

The ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the bridge between your PC and the entire Internet environment.

After choosing an ISP (from our offer or another) you will need to contact the ISP usually by phone and open an account with its service.
The ISP will provide you with a phone number to dial to, a user ID and a password.
Usually, at this stage, you are almost ready to surf the net, send E-mails, and chat with people all over the world.
Our pre-installed ISP offers contain all the information needed for the installation wizard, once you click on the installation wizard icon, it will lead you through the configuration process.
If you prefer another ISP, then you will need to get some information before you start the configuration (usually, your ISP will send you the required information by "snail mail" (i.e. traditional mail).
The basic information you need to know prior to installation is the following :
Your Login name (user ID)
Your Password
The ISP phone number to dial
E-Mail server name: POP (for incoming mail) and SMTP (for outgoing mail)

Next, we recommend that you use the Microsoft Internet connection wizard. To access this facility, click the following:
Start (lower left icon) > Settings > Control Panel > Internet (double click).
In the Internet window select the Connection tab, then click the Connection Wizard button.
The connection wizard together with the information provided by your ISP will help you to set up your PC very easily to access the Internet.
